Allah gave us as our responsibility the role of kalifah in this world. The primary role of the kalifah is to fight against the influence of shaitan. This obligation has three parts; we are to perfect ourselves according to the Will of Allah, we are to perfect all society according to the Will of Allah, and we are to perfect the physical environment according to the Will of Allah. Right now the Muslim ummah is not fulfilling this obligation.

In Islam there are obligations upon the individual and there are obligations upon the ummah. Every Muslim is responsible for fulfilling his or her own individual obligations. Responsibilities upon the ummah are usually fulfilled by only those among the ummah who specifically take on that responsibility. If those within the ummah who take on the responsibility successfully fulfill that obligation then it fulfills the requirement for all members of the ummah. If an obligation upon the whole ummah is not being fulfilled by those within the ummah who take on the responsibility then that obligation falls upon every member of the ummah until the obligation is successfully fulfilled.

You must know deeply in your heart that the influence of western secular materialism is the influence of shaitan. Western secular materialism takes us from our prayers, takes us from our Islamic culture, takes us from our Islamic economic system, takes us from our Islamic educational system, takes us from our Islamic values, turns our minds from Allah, and robs our children of an Islamic future. Western secular materialism gives us a society of crime, violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, prostitution, pornography, homosexuality, exploitation of people and resources, and reduces life to a meaningless exercise in futility. Western secular materialism creates in the minds of our children atheistic thought, disrespect for parents and elders, hopelessness, disregard for knowledge, and love of a debased animalistic lifestyle focused on only the crudest pleasures of the flesh. Do you not know this is exactly what shaitan most desires?

The long standing political and moral decline of the Muslim Ummah has reslted, among other things, in a serious distortion of our very concept of Islam itself. We have grown accustomed to viewing Islam as a mere “religion,” instead of using the original Qur’anic term “Deen.” This apparently minor change in semantics is actually a huge leap backwards. This is because the word religion is commonly used in a rather narrow sense, its scope being limited to a set of dogmas, some rituals for worship, and a number of social customs to celebrate important life-events. Deen, on the other hand, is a system of life in which human beings consciously surrender to the sovereignty of a higher authority, and live a life of total obedience to that higher authority. In this sense, the term Deen can be applied to monarchy, where the king is accepted as the final authority, or to democracy, where the people as a whole act as sovereign. Thus, when the term Deen is used for Islam, it obviously means a system of life where the Almighty God is worshipped and obeyed, not just in the narrow religious sense, but in a manner that includes all aspects of human of life.

A well-integrated set of beliefs describing the nature of existence as it really is (Iman), modes of worship including Salat, Zakat, Saum, and Hajj, as well as social customs and ceremonies — all comprise indispensable and integral parts of Islam. However, in addition to these “religious” features, we are also provided by the Almighty God all the relevant instructions regarding our social, economic, and political existence (generally considered to be the “secular” elements of life), and this is what really distinguishes Islam from other religions, say, Christianity or Buddhism. Unfortunately, the majority of our masses are simply, and perhaps blissfully, unaware of what it really means to be a Muslim; thus, their concept of religious duties is usually very narrow and limited. But, as Allama Iqbal has so correctly observed, you begin to shudder with the fear of accountability once you realize the tremendous responsibilities that come with being a Muslim.

When Islam loses its political authority, it is relegated and dethroned to the status of a mere religion — a private affair of the individual; and if any particular generation is to revive the teachings of Islam in the social, economic, and political spheres, then this is impossible without adopting the same methodology as was adopted by Prophet Muhammad (SAW). After the independence of the Muslim lands from direct subjugation of Western Imperialism, it was naively believed that since political authority now belongs to the Muslims, the next step, that of implementing the Islamic values, won’t be all that difficult. However, it has been proved during the last half century or so that the ideal Islamic State is still very much a dream, and since no short-cuts are available, we have no alternative except to start at the very beginning. We must remind the Muslims of their responsibilities. The significance of this subject is quite clear: We cannot hope to achieve salvation in the Hereafter without fulfilling all our obligations. Moreover, we cannot even think about the revival of the Muslim Ummah and the Renaissance of Islam without first inculcating the true concept of our Divinely ordained obligations in a significant portion of the Ummah.

OUR FIRST OBLIGATION as a Muslim is to develop real faith and true conviction (or Iman) in the teachings of the Qur’an as explained by to us by Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The faith must not be a mere dogma which has little or nothing to do with the practical aspects of one’s life, but it must be a deeply-felt certitude that changes the whole system of values, ambitions, and behavior in favor of Islam. Iman can be gained by reading, comprehending, and pondering over the meaning of Holy Qur’an with a genuine search for truth. The knowledge of Arabic language is indispensable for this purpose.

OUR SECOND OBLIGATION is to live a life of total obedience to the Almighty God. This duty is described in the Holy Qur’an as Ibadah, which is often inaccurately translated as worship or prayers. However, the true meaning of the term Ibadah can only be understood if we combine two apparently unrelated concepts: one is surrender, obedience, submission; the other is love, adoration, devotion. Total and unconditional compliance to all Divine injunctions is obviously required; at the same time, this compliance ought to be with a spirit of wholehearted devotion and love for the Creator.

All of us need someone or something to love, admire, and adore. Usually, our lack of knowledge of the one Being worthy of all our love, admiration, and adoration lead us towards other, less than perfect, ideals. We start loving various ideologies, like Socialism, or Liberalism, or Humanism; we sometimes start loving our tribe, our nation, or our race as the ultimate ideal. The Holy Qur’an teaches us that the faithful are those who love the Almighty God over everyone and everything else. When we love our Lord, we find it easy to obey Him. Sometimes we slip and forget, committing a sin; the point is to immediately turn back towards the Almighty God with genuine remorse, and to repent; if we can do this, Divine forgiveness is guaranteed.

OUR THIRD OBLIGATION as a Muslim is to preach and disseminate the word of Almighty Allah (SWT) — the Holy Qur’an — and the teachings of his last messenger Muhammad (SAW) to the whole humanity. What does it involve? Calling people towards the light of Islam and Iman; enjoining and encouraging all that is good and just and moral, forbidding all that is evil and unjust and sinful; exhorting the common people, explaining the philosophy and wisdom of Islam to the educated and intelligent classes, debating with the stubborn and the rigid; testifying to the truthfulness of the message with our behavior and conduct, our character and morals.

It is significant to note that communicating and explaining the teachings of Islam to others is not, as we have erroneously come to believe, the “profession” of the Mulla alone, but this is actually a duty of anyone who claims to be a Muslim. As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has ordered, “Convey on my behalf, even if it is only a single verse (of the Qur’an that you know).”

This is because preaching and delivering the message of God to the entire humanity is actually the responsibility of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), but now, after his departure and due to the termination of Prophethood, that sacred obligation has been transferred on to the shoulders of the Ummah as a whole. This, incidentally, is the purpose for which the entire Muslim Ummah was created in the first place, as mentioned in a most emphatic fashion in the Holy Qur’an: “You are the best of people raised for the (guidance of) mankind; You enjoin the good, forbid the evil, and believe in Allah” (3:110).

Of course, you cannot convince anyone unless you understand yourself the message you are trying to preach. Thus, according to another saying of the Prophet, “The best among you are those who learn (and comprehend) the Qur’an, and then teach (and propagate) its message.”

OUR FOURTH OBLIGATION as Muslims is to try our utmost in establishing a polity based on Qur’an and Sunnah and the Islamic System of Collective Justice, initially in our own homeland and then, ultimately, over the entire globe. The teachings of Islam vis-à-vis human society, law, economics, and politics cannot be implemented without a true and ideal Islamic state in existence. There are numerous terms to describe this highest of all our duties: establishing the Deen of Allah, achieving the domination of Islam, creating on earth the kingdom of God, bringing about an Islamic Revolution; different phrases, same meaning. Unless we succeed in creating a real model of what an ideal Islamic state should look like, all our adulations and glorifications of Islam would continue to be dismissed by the world as mere Utopian claims.

What are we talking about in practical terms? An ideal Islamic state is neither a monarchy nor a theocracy. Instead, we have a vision of a democratic welfare state, where the sovereignty of the Almighty God is accepted and enforced at all levels of the state — executive, judiciary, and legislature; where no law can be formulated repugnant to the Qur’an and the Sunnah; and where the elimination of all forms of injustice, exploitation, and repression is the primary aim of the government.

The process of an Islamic Revolution will start from a single country, and then it would spread to the rest of the globe. Muslims are obliged to struggle tirelessly in establishing the de facto soverignty of Almighty God, first in the country where they live, and ultimately all over the world.

This comprehensive view of the duties of a Muslim can be very easily understood by a simple analogy. Consider a three-storied building which is supported by four pillars. The underground foundation represents faith or Iman, which remains hidden from the spectators; the plinth of the building represents Shahadah, or the testimony of faith on a legal level; the four pillars of the building are obviously Salat, Zakat, Saum, and Hajj. The first floor represents our first level of obligation as a Muslim, i.e., to live a life of total obedience to Almighty God; the second floor is a symbol for our second level of obligation, i.e., to preach and disseminate the teachings of Islam; and, finally, the third floor represents our third level of obligation, to try our very best in establishing the Deen of Allah in its entirety on a socio-political level.

Islaam has forbidden the calls of jaahiliyyah (the prelslaamic days of ignorance) and there are many textual evidences which forbid all of the characteristics and manners of jaahiliyyah and their actions, except those (good and decent) practices which Isl aam agreed to. And there is no doubt that the call to nationalism is from these calls of jaahiliyyah, since nationalism is a call to other than Islaam and an aiding of other than the truth. And how many ills, evils and serious wars has such calls of jaahi liyyah caused to their people, causing great harm to their souls, their wealth and their possessions. The consequences of such calls (for the Muslims) was a splitting up of their unity and a planting of enmity and hatred of each other in their hearts and a fragmentation and splitting between tribes and nations.

Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H) rahimahullaah said: [2] "Everything which is outside the call of Islaam and the Qur'aan, with regards to lineage, land, nationality, schools of thoughts and ways, then it is from the calls of jaahiliyyah. lndeed, even when the Muhaa jirs (those Companions who migrated from Makkah to Madeenah) and the Ansaars (those Companions who aided and supported those who migrated) argued, such that one of the Muhaajirs said:" O Muhaajirs! (implying; rally to my aid) " And one of the Ansaar said: "O Ansaar!" Upon hearing this, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "Is it with the calls of Jaahiliyyah that you call, and l am still amongst you!" And he became very angry at that."[3]

And from the textual evidences pertaining to this issue is Allaah the Most High's saying:

"And stay in your homes and do not display yourselves, like the display of the times of jaahiliyyah (pre lslaamic ignorance). But establish the Prayer, give the Zakaat and obey Allaah and His Messenger. " [Soorah alAhzaab 33:33]

"When those who disbelieved placed in their hearts pride and arrogance the pride and arrogance of jaahiliyyah then Allaah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam and upon the Believers ..." [Soorah alFath 48 26].

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "Whosoever leaves off obedience and separates from the Jamaa'ah and dies, he dies a death of jaahiliyyah. Whoever fights under the banner of the blind, becoming angry for 'asabiyyah (partisanship and party s pirit), or calling to 'asabiyyah, or assisting 'asabiyyah, then dies, he dies a death of jaahiliyyah." [4]

Also in Saheeh Muslim (8/120) the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: lndeed Allaah has revealed to me that you should have humility, and that no one should act proudly and oppressively over anyone else, nor should anyone boast over anyone else. "

And there is no doubt that the call to nationalism is a call to 'asabiyyah (partisanship and party spirit) and it is a call to becoming angry for the sake of 'asabiyyah and fighting for 'asabiyyah. And there is no doubt also, that the call to nationalism is a call to transgression, pride and arrogance, since nationalism is not a divinely revealed way of life which prevents its people from oppression and proud boasting. Rather it is an ideology from the time of jaahiliyyah which leads its people to boastin g about it and having 'asabiyyah for it even if they are the oppressors and the others are the oppressed ! So O noble reader consider this and the truth will be clear to you.

And from the textual evidences connected with this is what at-Tirmidhee relates from Allaah's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam that he said: "Let people stop boasting about their forefathers who have died, who are merely fuel for the Hell Fire; or they will certainly be more insignificant with Allaah than the beetle which roles dung with its nose. Allaah has removed from you the party spirit of the days of jaahiliyyah and the boasting about one's forefathers. Indeed a person is either a pious Belie ver or a wretched sinner. All of mankind are the children of Aadaam, and Aadam was created from clay.[5]

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam also said: "Indeed there is no excellence for an arab over a non-arab, nor a non-arab over an arab, nor a white person over a black one, nor a black person over a white one, except through taqwaa (piety and obedie nce to Allaah) [6]

And this accords with Allaah the Most High's saying:

"O mankind! We have created you from male and female and have made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Indeed the most noblest of you with Allaah is the one who has the most taqwaa." [Soorah al-Hujuraat 49:13].

So Allaah the One free from all defects- made clear in this noble aayah (verse) that people have been made into nations and tribes so that they may come to know each other, not that they should boast and have pride over one another. And Allaah the Most Hi gh considered the most noblest of them to be the one with the most piety and taqwaa. Likewise, the previously mentioned narration shows the same meaning, and guides to the fact that it is from the ways of jaahiliyyah to vainly boast and to have false prid e for one's fore fathers and ancestry. This is what the calls of jaahiliyyah lead to, whereas Islaam is in opposition to this. Rather Islaam calls to modesty, humility, taqwaa and to having love for the sake of Allaah, and that the true and sincere Muslim s are merely one of the categories of the children of Aadam 'alayhis salaam, and that the Muslims are a single body and a single structure; each part supporting the other and each part feeling the pain that the other parts are suffering as occurs in an a uth entic hadeeth (narration) from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, that he said: "The Believer to the Believer is like a solid building, one part supports the other." And he interlaced his fingers to demonstrate this[7].

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam also said: "The example of the Believer in their mutual love and mercy is like the example of a body, if one part of the body feels pain, then all the body suffers in sleeplessness and fever. [8]

O people! I call to you in the name of Allaah. Does your nationalism call you to these noble manners of mercy and kindness to the Muslims the arabs and the non arabs and of having mutual sympathy and concern for them, and feeling pain at their pain? No by Allaah ! Rather it calls you to having allegiance with those who have evil character and it calls you to cultivating enmity and hatred for those who deny this false creed of nationalism . So beware, O Muslim who desires safety and salvation, and consider the reality of the affair with a fair consideration, without being prejudiced with party spirit and desires. Only then you will see the reality as it truly is. So may Allaah guide me and you to the means of safety and salvation.

And it is related by Imaam al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh (8/137), that a young man from the Muhaajirs and a young man from the Ansaar quarreled. So the Muhaajir said: "O Muhaajirs! (meaning: rally to my help)" And the Ansaaree said: "O Ansaar'" So the Prophe t sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam heard this and said: ''Is it with the call off jaahiliyyah that you are calling out, and I am present amongst you !"

Even though the term Muhaajir and Ansaar are two ascriptions which are beloved to Allaah the One free from all defects and He has praised these two groups with a very great praise, in His the Most High's saying:

"And the first to embrace Islaam from the Muhaajirs and the Ansaar, and those who followed them in goodness, beliefs and actions. Allaah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens of Paradise, beneath w hich rivers flow, to live therein forever. That is the supreme achievement." [Soorah at-Tawbah 9:100].

Yet in the above incident, this ascription to the Muhaajirs and seeking the help from them, and the Ansaar and seeking the help from them, when the likes of this was considered to be from the calls of jaahiliyyah, then what about those who claim allegianc e to nationalism and seek help through that and become angry for that? Will this not be more fitting to be considered one of the calls from the days of jaahiliyyah? This is a matter in which there is no doubt, and it is one of the clearest of all matters.

And this is what has been established in the authentic hadeeth (narration), from alHaarith alAsh'aree radiallaahu 'anhu, that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "I order you with five things which Allaah ordered me with: The Jamaa'ah, hearing , obeying, hijrah (migration) and jihaad in the way of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. So whosoever separates from the Jamaaah by a handspan, throws the yoke of Islaam from his neck, unless he repents. And whosoever calls with the call of jaahiliyyah (the days of ignorance), then he is from the hoarded heap of Hell Fire" It was said: Even if he fasts and prays? He said: "Even if he fasts and prays. So call with the call of Allaah which Allaah gave: The Muslims, the Believers, Worshippers of Allaah.' [9]

This hadeeth is absolutely clear with regards to rendering futile the calls to nationalism. Its callers deserve that they should be from the heap of Hell Fire, even if they fast and they Pray and claim that they are Muslims. So what a severe threat and se vere warning is given here; warning every muslim from the calls of jaahiliyyah and warning them from entering into this even if such calls are adorned with false talks and enchanting speeches . Rather it is a deception and a blind following which leads it s people to the worst and most despicable of ends. And we ask Allaah for safety and freedom from that.

E-DAWAH :FUNDAMENTALS AND METHODS

The Internet is revolutionizing the everyday life of ordinary people. Many Muslims do not recognize the unique opportunity the Internet offers for conveying Islam. Many nonMuslims searching for truth also benefit from the Internet. The Internet will never replace face-to-face dawah and direct mailing of Islamic literature, but the Internet will continue to broaden dawah opportunities in new ways that benefit both Muslims and non-Muslims. With the growth of the Internet, we have seen an amazing growth of business conducted over the Internet, or E-Commerce. I want to encourage using the Internet to convey the guidance of Islam, or E-Dawah. I want to explain specific ways we can use the Internet to propagate Islam. This article is only meant to be a starting point.

The Internet is the largest communication network ever produced. Before accessing the Internet, your computer must be connected to the Internet. Connections to the Internet include dial-up, cable modem, and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). A dial-up Internet connection is less expensive but much slower than a cable modem or DSL connection. A DSL connection is generally recommended over a cable modem connection. With DSL or cable modem, you do not have to reestablish a connection each time you want to access the Internet. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides a connection to the Internet. For a monthly fee, an ISP gives you a username and password along with a software package and customer support. For an ISP near you, search the Yellow Pages for Internet Service Providers or Internet Access Providers. ISPs are often called Internet Access Providers (IAPs). Most online services, such as American Online (AOL) and Microsoft Network (MSN), also offer access to most Internet services along with free customer service.

The best known feature of the Internet is the World Wide Web (WWW), or the Web. You use software called a web browser to access the Web. Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Netscape, make the Web full of colors, filled with graphics, sound, and video. Both browsers can be downloaded for free. Internet Explorer is generally recommended over Netscape. When you are viewing web pages, you are browsing, or surfing, the Web. The Web can also be used for e-mail, Usenet groups, and file transfer.

Electronic Dawah (E-Dawah) is using the Internet for dawah purposes. There are many benefits of E-Dawah. Using the Internet, traditional means of communication are transformed into electronic messages. The Internet allows you to easily and inexpensively communicate with people from around the world. Much time and money can be spent to purchase, produce, print, and mail literature. Much time and money can also be spent regularly calling people and keeping a staff available to answer questions. The Web makes learning more accessible. People are no longer totally dependent upon a teacher, classroom, or library. The Web offers world-wide resources as text, images, audio, and video. Using the Internet to perform research can help cut research costs and is often quicker. The Internet offers year around, up-to-the-minute information. Therefore, E-Dawah can become more efficient, effective, and less expensive. E-Dawah includes creating websites, writing e-mails, online research/education, and chatting for the purpose of propagating Islam. Perhaps, the biggest challenge for the Internet is getting rid of computer phobia.

Websites

A website is a place on the World Wide Web. A website consists of web pages that contain text, graphics, sounds, and videos. Web pages will also contain links to web pages and e-mail addresses within and outside the current website. Web pages are created using HTML. Each website is managed by an individual, company, or organization. Each web page has an address called a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). For example, the URL for the website of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is http://www.isna.net.

There are many benefits for creating your own website. People from across the globe can access your website. Web pages on your website can be printed from any computer connected to the Internet. People can also download information found on your website. Links to your website can also be e-mailed. Updating anything that you publish on the Web is simple and inexpensive. You can build a free website at geocities.yahoo.com, angelfire.lycos.com, homestead.com, or fortunecity.com. The downside to free websites are annoying banner or popup ads. These ads can be removed by upgrading to a payment plan. After purchasing a domain name such as name.com, www.name.org, or www.name.edu, you can find services that will host your domain name inexpensively if not for free.

Email

Electronic mail (E-mail) is used to send and receive messages over the Internet. The e-mail messages are usually notes typed using a keyboard. You can also e-mail attachments such as documents, pictures, and sounds. E-mail users can send e-mail any time of the day from anywhere in the world to essentially anywhere in the world. E-mail is also highly reliable. The recipient generally receives your e-mail within a few seconds or minutes. After reading your e-mail, you can reply to it, forward it, store it, or delete it. E-mail can also be printed out on a printer. E-mail systems offer various services such an address book for e-mail addresses, folders for saving messages, and the ability to send the same message to many people at once. All Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and online services such as AOL offer e-mail. You can also sign up for free e-mail account at mail.yahoo.com or Hotmail.com. I prefer the Yahoo e-mail service. Many individuals, organizations, and companies offer free e-mail accounts as a way to promote their website.

E-mail is an important means of communication. You can e-mail Islam-related information to Muslims and nonMuslim friends. You can use e-mail to contact and to be contacted by the media. You can also e-mail a letter to the editor and to television producers. You can visit websites of media outlets to find the e-mail addresses you need. You should always feel free to pitch news worthy topics to them. The media will love you if you can give them a great topic to report. They will love you even more if you can give them contact information for people who can contribute to the story.

Search engines

After entering keywords in a search engine, the search engine will search the Web and return a list of the web pages where the keywords were found. You can visit the web pages that contain the information you are seeking. For a more refined search, enter more detailed keywords. For example, rather than entering ‘Muslim’ in a search engine, you may want to enter ‘Latino Muslims.’ Keywords can be anything you want to research. You can also use search engines to search Usenet newsgroups. Google.com, Yahoo.com, Search.com, MSN.com, AltaVista.com, and Excite.com are popular search engines.

I use Google.com on a regular basis. I suggest Download.com and Shareware.com to find a variety of software. Both part of CNET Central (Cnet.com). I recommend searching for images at images.google.com. I recommend using FindArticles.com to search over 300 magazines for articles covering various subjects. FindArticles.com also contains a comprehensive list of websites for various magazines and journals categorized by subject. Many search engines, such as Yahoo, MSN, and Excite, and are called portals, or more specifically horizontal portals. These websites serve as a starting point for whatever you want to do on the Web. For example, Yahoo attempts to provide for all your Internet needs with its website. Yahoo offers free e-mail at mail.yahoo.com, map searches at maps.yahoo.com, yellow pages at yp.yahoo.com, news at news.yahoo.com, and shopping at shopping.yahoo.com. You can also search for phone numbers at people.yahoo.com, play online games at games.yahoo.com, plan vacations at travel.yahoo.com, and check the weather at weather.yahoo.com. To take advantage of Yahoo.com services, you must register for a Yahoo ID by registering for a free Yahoo e-mail address at mail.yahoo.com. To take advantage of MSN.com services, you must register for a .NET Passport by registering for a free Hotmail e-mail address at hotmail.com or by registering any e-mail address as a .NET Passport at register.passport.net. MSN offers services similar to Yahoo.

Whereas horizontal portals attempt to be an all-purpose, vertical portals cater their content and services to consumers within a particular industry. For example, Islamicity.com focuses on everything about Islam whereas Garden.com is centered on everything about plants. Both websites are created with a different audience in mind and attempt to meet the needs of that particular audience.

Chatting

Once a chat session has started, an Internet user can send messages by typing on a keyboard and the entered message will instantaneously appear on the monitor of anyone participating in the chat session. Anyone who receives your message can reply, and you will see the message instantaneously. You can chat with old friends and make new friends. You can chat with people from anywhere who share similar interests. You can chat by using an Instant Messenger or by visiting a chat room.

The most popular Instant Messaging programs are AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN Messenger. A typical Instant Messenger (IMer) chat session involves only two users, and both people must use the same IMer to initiate a chat session. AIM is available at aim.com. Yahoo Messenger is available at messenger.yahoo.com. MSN Messenger is available at messenger.msn.com. ICQ is available at icq.com. All four are free to download and install. You need a Yahoo ID to use Yahoo Messenger. You need a .NET Passport to use MSN Messenger. You can sign up for a free account to use AIM and ICQ before and after installing either IMer.

In addition to sending text messages, Instant Messengers allow you to send files such as documents, images, and movies over the Internet. You can also send emoticons, such as a smiling or sad face. Instant messengers also give you a contacts list to add screen names of other users. They allow you to search for other IM users and to accept messages from only the IM users you want. If you don’t want certain IM users to send you instant messages, you can block their screen names.

A chat room is an online “room” where you can chat with many people at the same time. Everyone can see what everyone else writes. Most chat rooms also allow users to send private messages to others in the chat room. Some chat rooms have moderators who monitor the online discussion. Some chat rooms have moderators who determine which messages are ultimately sent out to the chat room. Moderators can warn or kick users who misbehave out of the room. Some chat rooms have no moderation.

You can access chat rooms in several ways. You can use IMers such as those by Yahoo and AOL to access chat rooms. You can access online chat rooms at chat.yahoo.com and at chat.msn.com. To access their available chat rooms, you should sign up for either a Yahoo ID or .NET Passport. Many websites offer their own chat rooms. Online services such as AOL and MSN offer chat rooms available only to subscription members. AOL subscribers can use AOL’s own software for e-mail, chat rooms, instant messaging, and newsgroups. All AOL services and web pages are not available to all Internet users. MSN is far more compatible with the Internet than is AOL. However, AOL continues to have far more users than MSN. MSN and ISP subscribers can both access an Internet chat room service called Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Perhaps, the best IRC program available is mIRC. mIRC is available at www.mIRC.com. Whether you choose to use an IMer, online chat rooms, or IRC, you can search available chat rooms to find those that suit your interests.

Usenet newsgroups

Usenet is a worldwide system of Internet newsgroups, or electronic billboards. The Usenet contains thousands of newsgroups hosted all over the world, covering every imaginable topic. It is used daily by millions of people around the world. You can read, post, and reply to messages. Newsgroups you may want to visit include those within alt.religion.*, soc.culture.*, soc.religion.*, and alt.politics.* Categories under alt.religion.* include alt.religion.islam.* and alt.religion.christian.* Many nonMuslims often post general questions about Islam. You can post questions and answers about Islam. You may want to monitor newsgroups for negative comments to clear up misconceptions about Islam.

You can access Usenet newsgroups at Deja.com. You can post and read messages after you have registered. Some search engines such as Google also offer access to newsgroups. You can also use software such as FreeAgent to access newsgroups. Because FreeAgent is incompatible with AOL, AOL subscribers must use either the Web or AOL to access newsgroups. Many websites maintain their own electronic billboards. Islamicity.com maintains an extensive billboard system. These billboards are often called message boards, forums, or discussion groups. Some websites also maintain a guestbook for posting comments and questions. These types of billboards and guestbooks are not to be confused with Usenet newsgroups.

Newslists

People with a common interest can subscribe to an email service called a newslist. When a member sends an email to the newslist, the member sends the message to the entire group. All members receive messages posted to the newslist. Newslists can be a very important and effective communication tool. Various kinds of organizations use newslists to discuss, plan, and announce events and to discuss recent news, various topics, and concerns. Subscribing to a newslist can keep you informed. Most newslists have at least one moderator. The moderator is very much like that of a chat room moderator. The moderator enforces the rules of the newslist. For example, the moderator decides what ultimately gets posted, decides who can join the newslist, and can kick people off the list who violate rules. Some newslists are not moderated.

Subscribing to a newslist is an easy process. You usually have to send an e-mail to an address that looks something like “subscribe-me@organization.com.” Depending on the newslist, you may need to include on the subject line something such as “Subscribe FirstName LastName.” Afterward, you may receive an e-mail asking you to confirm you subscription. This e-mail will explain how to complete the subscription process. This e-mail will also explain how to unsubscribe from the list. You can also subscribe to some newslists on the Web using an online form.

The two most popular newslist services are Yahoogroups at groups.yahoo.com and MSN groups at groups.msn.com. I recommend Yahoogroups although both services are very similar. Anyone can join a Yahoogroup by visiting groups.yahoo.com. Anyone with an e-mail account can subscribe to a Yahoogroup by e-mailing NAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, unsubscribe by e-mailing NAME-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com, post messages by e-mailing NAME@yahoogroups.com, and e-mail the group owner by e-mailing NAME-owner@yahoogroups.com where ‘NAME’ denotes the Yahoogroup name.

To take full advantage of Yahoogroups, you have to get a Yahoo ID. You can set settings for your Yahoogroups at groups.yahoo.com/mygroups. Each Yahoogroup has a website where you can access previous group postings at groups.yahoo.com/group/NAME where ‘NAME’ denotes the Yahoogroup name. The website for each Yahoogroup also contains a chat area, a polls and surveys area, and a place to share pictures, files, and website links. You must have a Yahoo ID to start your own Yahoogroup.

Communication

As Muslims, we must continue to communicate the message of Islam. We will always continue traditional means of communication. You will still use the telephone and the postal service for planning activities. You will still mail Islamic brochures and books. You will also continue to hold interfaith dialogues at churches. You will also continue to educate yourself at your mosque’s library. However, now you can also write e-mail to Muslims and non-Muslims around the world. You can create an Islam-related website and e-mail its link around the world. You can use a newslist for planning activities. After finding an interesting article, you can print the article from the Web to distribute among friends. You can have interfaith dialogues in Christian chat rooms. You can use a search engine to answer your Islam-related questions. Irregardless of the means, we must continue to communicate the guidance without deviation, distortion, and innovation, inshAllah.

Love of Virtuous Deeds

Ibn Abi Al-Dunya narrated: Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said: "The best loved slaves to Allah are those who are made to love virtue and loving virtuous deeds is made lovely to them."

Good Manners and Conduct

Al-Tirmidhi narrated: Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said: "The best loved by me and the nearest to me on the seats on the Day of Resurrection are those who have the best manners and conduct amongst you, who are intimate, are on good terms with others and are humble, and the most hated by me and who will be on the furthest seats from me are those who are talkative and arrogant."

Love of Allah is the basis of worship that should be directed to Him alone. Any other love should be for his sake too. The real love of Allah is to do whatever He ordained and to abandon whatever He forbade, in addition to following the Prophet's Sunna.

Whoever obeys someone or something other than Allah and His Messenger, on follows any saying other than theirs, or fears other than Allah or seeks the pleasure of other than Allah, or puts his trust in other than Him, does not love Allah, nor does he love His Messenger. Muslims should also love one another and wish the best for one another. Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said:

"One will not be a true believer unless he loves for his brother what be loves for himself." (Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Ahmed and Ibn Majah)

Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed narrated: Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said: "Allah said: My love is due to those who love one another for My sake."
